H. B. Mallalieu

British poet Herbert Blythe (H.B.) Mallalieu was born in Orange, New Jersey, but lived most of his life in England. Educated in Wells, Somerset, Mallalieu served in World War II in the British Forces and gained renown as a war poet. Mallalieu’s work is characterized by his visionary modernism, and writer Julian Symons called him “one of the best-known of the younger British poets before the [Second World] War.” After the war, he lived in Germany, where he served in the British Services Security Organization for 20 years.

Mallalieu published several collections in his lifetime, including Letter in Wartime (1940) and On the Berlin Lakes (1988). He died in 1988.
